- Sunrise on the Pacific
- The kids took a field trip to see a WWII plane
- Andrew’s first modeling photo. So trendy with a handwoven coconut leaf bag.
- A new friend also on her way to Ukarumpa after orientation.
- New friends in the village
- Alyssa and Lennon (the youngest boy of the family we stayed with in the village)
- We lived in this house for five days with our adopted family.
- Mama and Auntie making bilums. (market bags)
- Our papa that we lived with is seated in the doorway.
- This was our entire personal space. Each morning we moved the mosquito net and all the bedding so that we could get into our totes to get dressed and make meals. The room was about 6 x 8 feet.
- This is the path we went down to get to the water source. If it had rained the night before, we would slip in the mud all the way down. At least once we were clean from the creek, it was usually easier to go back up without falling.
- The water hole. The coolest place in the village.
- The people in our village had rigged up a pipe to turn this small piece of the shallow creek into a shower.
- Auntie and the pipe shower. Showering was very public and quite tricky.
- Hanging out down by the creek
- On a hike to see our family’s garden. It took us two hours to hike there, see it, and come back.
- Alyssa and Lennon resting on the porch in the heat of the day. Her crown is made of coconut leaves.
- Andrew with cousin Philbert and Auntie Brenna.
- The counter above Alyssa is the kitchen counter inside the house. During our stay the whole thing fell down, but this picture was taken after it was fixed. All the houses are built as temporary shelters and last up to ten years. Then they just build a new one and burn down the old one.
- This is the mama of our family. She has such a beautiful smile!
